"Mephistopheles-In Frustration I Hear Singing- 1969 US":
This was the one and only LP by 'Mephistopheles'. Has elements of prog and psych and they give to the album a very interesting feel. The music was very promising with heavy drums and spaced out guitar riffs but also they have some mellow songs. Produced by Dave Hassinger and recorded at the Sound Factory in Hollywood.(vinyl rip)

PERSONNEL: Fred Tackett ~ guitar, piano, trumpet, vocals Steven Simone ~ guitar, vocals Bob Siller ~ acoustic guitar, vocals Gordon Grant ~ piano, organ Skip Mosher ~ bass, flute Darry Burch ~ drums

"Ramatam - S/T - 1971 US": Ramatam was a sort of mini-supergroup, formed in the early 70's by Mike Pinera, from the Blues Image, Iron Butterfly and Mitch Mitchell, former drummer for Jimi Hendrix. They also had one other distinction, a female lead guitarist, April Lawton, a rare thing in those days. The album delivers a lot of wailing guitar and the band seemed to be headed to early 70's stardom. Their self-titled debut album, hit the Billboard charts in 1972.

"Puzzle-S/T- 1969 US": Blues Influenced power trio from Washington D.C. who had a psychedelic taint to their music. Produced by Eddie Kramer.

"Quicksliver Messenger Service - Quicksliver -1971 US":

The original line-up of QMS, including Dino Valenti, Jim Murray and John Cipollina, came together in early 1965. Various personnel changes occured through that year culminating in the arrival of Gary Duncan and Greg Elmore from The Brogues. The first two QMS albums were recorded by the classic line-up of the group John Cipollina, Gary Duncan, Greg Elmore and David Freiberg. Further changes included the addition of Nicky Hopkins in 1969 and the return of Dino Valenti in 1970. The group split up in 1972.

Here is the sixth QMS LP, the first to be made without John Cipollina. Also a great album, with songs like: "Out of My Mind", "Don't Cry My Lady Love", " The Truth"...

Musicians:
Dino Valenti - guitar, vocals
Greg Elmore - drums
Gary Duncan - vocals, guitar
Mark Ryan - bass
Mark Naftalin - keyboards
Chuck Steaks - keyboards

"Christopher- What'cha Gonna Do?-1969 US":

The one and only rare effort from South Carolina's Christopher, is an acid-blues drenched beautifully .

The album got plenty of heavy fuzz guitar, but also some surprisingly personal vocals, sung in a mode that's heartfelt, more slightly sad and dreamy, creating a sense of loss that really marks the mood of the album. When the heavier guitars kick in, the blend with the vocals is especially great .I heard that only 100 originally issued as a private pressing in 1969 to use as a demo, so its rare forever.

"Cal Tjader-Solar Heat -1968 US":

Cal Tjader always slipped between music’s cracks. He was an accomplished jazz swinger, first on drums then on vibraphone. He was also one of the first to successfully introduce Latin dialects to the jazz language.

Born on July 16, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, Cal Tjader was first heard in the drum seat of Dave Brubeck’s 1949 trio (right before Paul Desmond joined the group) and later in pianist George Shearing’s famed and hugely popular quintet (where he first met up with percussionist Armando Peraza).

SOLAR HEAT, probably meant to continue the wave of soulful titles, was recorded in January 1968 and is the very first of 20 Skye Recordings made during 1968 and 1969.

Tjader is beautifully framed here by Gary McFarland’s crystalline arrangements (and occasional dual vibes work) and João Donato’s gorgeously understated organ.

MEMBERS: Ray Barretto - Latin Percussion · Chuck Rainey - Bass · Michael Abene - Harpsichord Piano · João Donato - Organ · Gary McFarland - Arranger , Vibraphone · Bobby Rodriguez - Bass · Cal Tjader - Vibraphone · Orestes Vilato - Latin Percussion

"Cecil Holmes -The Black Motion Picture Experience-1973 US":

Cecil Holmes was an executive at Buddah Records as well as a recording artist himself. This was one of his solo releases. Here goes a nice bunch of blax-covers - instrumental versions of all-time black hits.

The large group on the album features funky keyboards by Pat Rebillot, plus plenty of wah wah guitar and enough strings to make the album rank up there with the soundtrack feel of the day. Includes versions of "Superfly", "Shaft", "Freddie's Dead", "Across 110th Street", "2001" and "Trouble Man".

"C.A QUINTET-Trip Thru Hell -1969 US":
The C.A. Quintet was a Psychedelic band from Minneapolis active in the late 60's. They failed to gain national notoriety during their heyday. Their only LP released during the band's existence. 'Trip thru hell' sold less than 1000 copies and was virtually unheard of outside of their home town.
Despite its minuscule intitial distribution, the record slowly gained popularity over the next twenty years among collectors and musicians.
Among others, the version of S.J. Hawkins ' I Put a Spell on You' is excellent!!!

"The Chocolate Watch Band-Inner Mystique -1968 US": This was the second album by '60s garage band lengends the Chocolate Watchband.Originally released in 1968, the first three cuts "Voyage Of The Trieste", "In The Past" and the title track "Inner Mystique" are really good psychedelic tunes and two of them were penned by famed record producer Ed Cobb. The rest are pretty good garage rock.

This is a "must have" album. Recommended.

THE ARTWOODS- Jazz In Jeans EP + singles-1964-67 UK":

Formed in London in 1964, the Artwoods consisted of Arthur (Art) Wood on vocals, Derek Griffiths on guitar, Malcolm Pool on bass, Jon Lord on organ and Keef Hartley on drums. Art is the older brother of Ronnie Wood.

Jon Lord came from the Bill Ashton Combo while Art Wood has sung with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated. Keef had previously played with Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, replacing a certain Ringo Starr, and Freddie Starr and the Midnighters.
The Artwoods was very popular in the clubs around London gained a reputation as the hardest working R & B band on the circuit. The live set consisted of both Chicago Blues standards and original material. Many appearances were made on the top UK pop TV show Ready, Steady Go.

The band split in 1967 at the time of psychedelia. Keef Hartley left the band to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and later formed the Keef Hartley Band.

Jon Lord joined the Flowerpot Men and later moved to Deep Purple and Derek Griffiths became a session player.

MEMBERS: vocals- Art Wood, guitar- Derek Griffiths, bass- Malcolm Pool, drums- Keef Hartley, organ- Jon Lord

"Quicksilver Messenger Service - S/T- (FIRST ALBUM) -1968 US":

This album was released in the spring of 1968, a year that produced a great deal of music that's now very hard to listen to.Vocalist Dino Valente 's subsequent drug bust and incarceration didn't prevent them from playing live but it did delay the completion of their first album.

Quicksilver's debut was consequently more mature than those of their late-1960s San Francisco Sound brethren Big Brother, the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

Quicksilver's first outing offers long instrumental passages and a communal attitude toward vocals and solos.

"Los Holy’s - Sueno Sicodelico - 1967 PERU": 'Los Holy’s' are a blazing constellation. They could be considered the first local psychedelia movement of the mid-60s. They were capable of experimenting with compositions and sounds beyond the New Wave beat melodies common at the time, and all of this while remaining a basically instrumental band.

They released a highly regarded album, 'Sueno Sicodelico' in the late sixties as well as several singles. It contains some good sound effects and is well worth a spin.

"Funk Inc-S/T-1971 US": The excellent first acid jazz album by Funk Inc.
Highly regarded in soul-jazz circles, organ combo Funk Inc. has specialized in a very accessible, groove-oriented blend of jazz, funk and R&B.
For funky friends, "Kool Is Back" is unbelievably perfect. From the opening guitar licks to the percussive build-up to the organ vamps and brass section. Also a great version of 'The Thrill Is Gone'!!!
The group was founded in Indianapolis in 1969 by organist Bobby Watley, who recruited tenor saxman Eugene Barr, guitarist Steve Weakley, drummer Jimmy Munford and conga player Cecil Hunt. Enjoy!!!
LOST IN TYME :http://lost-in-tyme.blogspot.com/ IS BACK!!!
WELCOME . Glad to have them back!!!

Booker T. & The MG's -Soul Dressing-1965 US": The great MG's second album is a collection of single sides recorded between 1962 and 1964. The title track hit the Hot 100, climbing to #95.
Personnel:Booker T. Jones, organ, piano
Steve Cropper, guitar Lewis Steinberg, bass
Al Jackson, Jr., drums.

"Xit- Entrance -1974 US": XIT are a popular rock group from Albuquerque, NM. 1974 'Entrance' release by Native American psych rockers, (x-LINCOLN STREET EXIT, with Tom Bee) contains Lincoln Street era recordings that were never released. All members of XIT are American Indians, chronicling the changes in Native American life since the arrival of Columbus.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

One more request:
"Forever Amber - The Love Cycle -1969 UK":

Long established as one of the ultimate vinyl rarities (copies are currently valued in excess of £1500) to escape from the British psychedelic era. The Love Cycle was recorded at a local demo studio in the summer of 1968 by Cambridge pop-psych hopefuls Forever Amber.

The album featured non less than five lead vocalists over its 16 cuts, which ranged from ornate, Left Banke-leaning harpsichord based pop to full-blown psychedelic freak out. The overall effects is akin to a low-budget garage band version of Zombies 'Odyssey and Oracle'.

"Gabor Szabo-Spellbinder - 1966 US": SPELLBINDER, a successful mix of standards and on-the-spot improvisations, contains the original version of "Gypsy Queen," the song featured on Santana's album ABRAXAS, reached number four on the Billboard charts (11/21/70). Features bassist Ron Carter on bass, Chico Hamilton on drums and percussionists Victor Pantoja and Willie Bobo.

"Gabor Szabo - Jazz Raga -1966 US":
A brilliant record featuring Szabo’s distinctive guitar and his overdubbed, out-of-tune sitar playing.
Funk drummer Bernard Purdie contributes successfully to the percussive groove and even the odd-sounding sitar isn’t as obtrusive as is often suggested.
Gabor Szabo (g, sitar overdubbed) Bob Bushnell (g) Johnny Gregg (b) Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (d).

"Yuya Uchida & The Flowers-Challenge -1969 Japan":

First incarnation of the legendary Japanese hard prog psych rock act Flower Travellin' Band. Debut album by Yuya Uchida & The Flowers which was started by Yuya Uchida (born on 17 November 1939) who already was making some rockabilly singles in the early '60s and was one of the opening performers when The Beatles came to Japan in 1966.

But when he traveled to Europe in 1967, he was immediately inspired by Cream, Jimi Hendrix and The Who. When he returned to Japan, he started the band The Flowers with female vocalist Remi Aso, and the band caused a sensation in the Japanese music scene. Most of the tracks on this album are covers of songs by Cream, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane...

"George Romanos - Two Small Blue Horses 1970 Greece": Ultra rare Greek early 70s exotic psychedelic acid leaking rocker with fuzzy guitar, phased vocals, effects, and tripped out vibe all over. Exotic melodies coupled with a full-force fuzz assault, with a nod to the Byrds "Eight Miles High". Original vinyl pressings sell for over $1,500. ( request)

"Ultra Funk - kung fu man - 1975 UK": A rare bit of funk from the mid 70s UK scene, cut with a groove that's got plenty of blacksploitation soundtrack touches.

UltraFunk were most likely a studio group assembled for the session but they've got a tight sound that makes them perfect for serving up the mix of grooves in the set, a great blend of originals and covers, all done with lots of influences from cop shows, action soundtracks, and kung fu movies!

Most cuts are instrumentals and have some great keyboard and electric bits. The vocal version of 'kung fu man', featuring Mr. Superbad, Freddie Mack is a terrific, funky dance track sounds a lot like a very early Rap. (vinyl rip)

"CCS - S/T- 1970 UK": The band was an idea of John Cameron and the producer Mickie Most.

CCS was an English band of Jazz Rock , that was active between 1970 and 1974. The name is formed by the abbreviations of the expression 'Collective Consciousness Society'.

The band counted on two vocalist, Peter Thorup and Alexis Korner , this last one considered the true father of the British blues.

The first album was published in 1970 and it was called, CCS. It contained, basically, subjects of Thorup, Korner and Cameron, but also some versions of subjects of groups of rock of the time, like 'Living in the past' of Jethro Tull, as well as classic like' I can't get not satisfaction' of Rolling Stones, or a spectacular version of the spiritual black, 'Wade in the water'.

Nevertheless, the subject that placed them in British charts was the version of 'Whole lotta love' of Led Zeppelin.

"Gabor Szabo-Wind, Sky And Diamonds-1967 US": Born in Hungary in 1936, Gabor Szabo began playing guitar when he was 14 and often played in dinner clubs and secret jam sessions while still living in Budapest.
He relocated to the United States in 1956, after serving as a Freedom Fighter in Hungary.
Settling in California, he attended Berklee College between 1958 and 1960.
Daringly different in his approach to jazz, Szabo combined the melodic elements from four continents with his own haunting Gypsylike style, and his compositions which have been credited by American critics as having a profound effect on the jazz idiom have become legendary.
WIND, SKY & DIAMONDS is an Superior West Coast jazz talent is present -- including guitarists Howard Roberts, Dennis Budimer and Herb Ellis, pianist Mike Melvoin and percussionists Victor Feldman and Emil Richards. It seems the real intention is to spotlight the vocalists; a group of studio singers, known at the time as the California Dreamers.
Szabo himself seems like an afterthought. His familiar guitar is hardly noticeable and his ideas seem tacked on to the proceedings. He is subjected to noodling occasionally between vocal lines and only infrequently carries the melody ("White Rabbit," "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds").
WIND, SKY & DIAMONDS remains an important part of Gabor Szabo's discography. It celebrates much of what was important to the guitarist: the new world of rock music, the beauty of California, the hope and inspiration sweeping through the "Summer of Love," the freedom drugs promised and a whole new world that seemed to be shaping before everybody's eyes that year.

"Wynder K. Frog- Into The Fire -1970 UK": London-born keyboard player Mick Weaver has had a long career in music, from his early r'n'b performances to his recent work in Taj Mahal's band, but this article is concerned with his body of work in the late 1960's as Wynder K. Frog, leader of the eponymous (mostly) instrumental powerhouse outfit.

One of British rock's relatively-unsung heroes of the Hammond B3 organ, he is a supreme master of the instrument, particularly in blues/funk modes. Though much of his work has been relatively low profile as a session musician, or on stage on keyboards behind better known musicians.

PERSONNEL : Shawn Phillips - guitar, vocals Rocky Dzidzornu - percussion Neil Hubbard - guitar Chris Mercer - saxophone Bruce Rowland - drums Alan Spenner - bass Mick Weaver - keyboards

"The Incredible String Band - The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion - 1967 UK":

Stone psychedelic freaks Robin Williamson and Mike Heron were two talented multi-instrumentalists who were eventually joined in the Incredible String Band by their earth-goddess lovers, Licorice and Rose.

They tapped into the British Isles' centuries-old traditions of myths and folklore, updating the ancient sounds with inspired, multi-layered recordings and a modern twist that helped you envision fair maidens riding unicorns through green and fertile fields while simultaneously advocating better living through chemistry.

5000 Spirits was their second album, is more psychedelic and quite unlike anything else that was around at the time.

The fusion of folk, blues and psychedelia, gave 5000 Spirits a unique sound that has guaranteed a place in music history.

"Laghonia - Glue-1969 PERU": 'Glue' is one of the best South American psychedelic albums!!!With English vocals, intense Fuzz Wah-Wah Guitars, Hammond B-2 Organ and a massive, variative percussion set. The music goes into Santana, Cream, Hendrix and other different directions.

The core of Laghonia, post 'New Juggler Sound' is a combination of Peruvian and US members, Saul Cornejo Vocals, Guitar, Manuel Cornejo on Drums, and David Levene on Lead Guitar and Vocals.

Characterized by complex song structures and memorable guitar solos, and featuring a guest appearance on sitar from U.S. folkie Shawn Philips, the album has gone on to become a major cult favorite.

"The Rainy Daze- That Acapulco Gold -1967 US":

Great Pop /Psych LP with some raw punky moments and good use of Fuzz guitar. The only lp from 'THE RAINY DAZE'.
Formed in Denver, CO, in 1965,
Comprised of Tim Gilbert , John Carter, Kip Gilbert, Mac Ferris , Sam Fuller and Bob Heckendorf. The song THAT ACAPULCO GOLD rose to number 70 on the national charts before radio programmers discovered its pro-marijuana content.
By this time Tim Gilbert and Carter were earning notice as a crack songwriting duo, and via Slay earned a crack at revamping a demo track cut by an unknown psych-pop outfit known as Thee Sixpence . Gilbert and Carter added lyrics and a new melody, titling the finished song "Incense and Peppermints." Thee Sixpence cut the new tune, renamed themselves The Strawberry Alarm Clock immediately and in late 1967 topped the Billboard pop charts.

"The Corporation - S/T-1969 US": Excellent Garage Psych LP, features their masterpiece, a 19:33-minute, side-long cover of 'John Coltranes'
"India" which is super deep and mystical Eastern-influenced jazz-psych brimming with amazing fuzzed out guitar..

Formed in Wisconsin in 1968 at Cudahy's Galaxy Club where the Kondos brothers joined up with members of an outfit called Eastern Mean Time. Some months later they were heard by Capitol reps at another club The Bastille, which the band had bought into. With a contract for an album the band journeyed to Detroit to record at Terra Shirma studios with producer John Rhys.

Here is the third and their last album released in February 1969. With strong compositions and vocals backed by organ and fuzz guitar leads, this one has all the right late sixties moves.

"The Mugwumps- 1964 US":
In 1963, Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky got together with Jim Hendricks and his wife, Cass Elliot, to become
'Cass Elliot and the Big Three'. After an uneventful release the group added John Sebastian and renamed themselves 'the Mugwumps'.

In 1964, they recorded an eponymous LP and released a single, “I’ll Remember Tonight,”.
After this album 'the Mugwumps' split in four separate directions.

Doherty became a member of 'the Journeymen' with John Phillips and Michelle Gilliam(by now Michelle Gilliam Phillips, John’s wife). Yanovsky and Sebastian founded 'the Lovin’ Spoonful', and Cass Elliot joined a short-lived jazz act. Jim Hendricks joined a new group called 'the Lamp of Childhood'.
By 1965 'the Journeymen' had decided their fortunes would be better served elsewhere and migrated to the Virgin Islands. Cass Elliot did a stint in the islands at the same time (as a waitress, not a singer) and in 1965 relocated to Los Angeles.
'The Journeymen' headed west soon after, and Cass ended up as the fourth and final member.By the end of 1965 they were called
'the Mamas and the Papas'.

"Erkin Koray-Elektronik Turkuler -1974 Turkey": Terrific heavy Eastern raves and drones from Turkey's legendary freaked-out psychedelic guitar guru. Possibly the greatest album ever from Turkish psychedelic maestro Erkin Koray, a mad blend of sounds that definitely lives up to its "elektronik" title! Most numbers feature a weird blend of electric guitar and baglama.

"Rahul Dev Burman -Shalimar -OST 1978 India": Rahul Dev Burman, also known as R. D. Burman, (1939 - 1994) was one of the great music composers of Bollywood.

He was the only son of singer and music composer Sachin Dev Burman and Meera, and the second husband of playback singer Asha Bhosle . He is credited with revolutionizing the music in Hindi films, and his style and techniques continue to be followed by the composers of today.
Bollywood moog/sitar funk Shalimar OST is one of the best music given by great R.D.Burman, using huge orchestra musical instruments Indian and western both for movie Producer Director Krishna Shah.

"Shocking Blue - Beat With Us- 1968 Holland":
The Shocking Blue story effectively started when Van Leeuwen left the Motions in 1967. He recruited members from other Hague bands for his new group.

The Shocking Blue were already making records before Mariska Veres entered as their singer in 1968. During that initial period (1967-68), the lineup was: Robbie van Leeuwen (vocals, guitar, ex-Motions), Fred de Wilde (vocals, ex-Hu & Hilltops), Klaasje van der Wal (bass) and Cor van Beek (drums, ex-Sect).

In 1968, Fred was replaced by Mariska, who had already made a solo single in 1965.Here is their first album.

"San Ul Lim - My Heart, Vol. 3 -1978 Korea": San Ul Lim was the most sunshine rock band in South-Korea.
The tunes have some languorous, moody bits that are rich with atmosphere and some really sweet work on bass and fuzzy guitars.
They are brothers, Kim Chang Wan is the group leader Lead vocals and guitar, Kim Chang Hun is a bass guitar player and Kim Chang Ik is a drummer. The band name called San Ul Lim means “That Mountain Echo”. They were born out of a rich family in Seoul.

This is a concept LP dealing with gender oppositions a "war between the sexes". "Gandalf-S/T-1969 US": With spellbinding, atmospheric songs which spin from soft dreamscapes into blistering fuzz guitar breaks, New York based band Gandalf casts a powerful spell.
Led by singer/guitarist Peter Sando, the group was signed by Lovin' Spoonful producers Charlie Koppelman and Don Rubin and conjured their sole, self-titled album for Capitol in late 1967.
One of the rarest major label psychedelic releases, Gandalf features swirls of Hammond B3 organ, caressing vibraphone runs and electric sitar on Sando's originals as well as imaginative recastings of songs by Tim Hardin, Gary Bonner/Alan Gordon and Eden Ahbez. Unfortunately, the band broke up in 1968 before the original LP was released.

BAND MEMBERS: Peter Sando- Guitar, Electric Sitar, Vocals

A rare one & only melodic rural hippy rock album from 1973.

"Velvert Turner Group -S/T-1972 US": New York-born guitarist's one & only album, originally released in 1972 . Although he was right-handed, Turner claimed to be both friend & protege of the great Jimi Hendrix.
The music is Hendrix inspired hard guitar psych with some funky touches, as well as plenty of furious, wah-wah/distorted leads and Hendrix like vocals!!!

Band members include Prescott Niles (The Knack) & Tim McGovern.

"P. J. Orion and The Magnates -S/T-1967 US": They were sons in affluent Greek shipping families, P.J. Orion & the Magnates put out a self-released garage rock LP while attending prep school in Massachusetts, like quite a few bands at such institutions did in the 1960s. The self-titled album consists entirely of covers, mostly of British Invasion and folk-rock hits, all done rawly but competently in folk-rock-heavy arrangements.

"Savoy Brown - Raw Sienna -1969 UK":Savoy Brown is a British blues band formed in the 1960s. 'Raw Sienna' is the fifth album by the band.

This is one album that passes the test of time. The baritone voice of Chris Youlden is at its best, Kim Simmond's guitar licks are priceless. Awesome U.K blues masterpiece.
Highly Recommended!!!

"Fairport Convention - What we did on our holidays-1969 UK": 'What We Did on Our Holidays' was the title of the second album by the folk/psych band Fairport Convention.

This album included the vocals of Sandy Denny contributes her haunting songs and indelibly husky voice. This album contains some very memorably early Fairport tunes. The set list is the most diverse they would ever offer, stacking solid covers of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan beside traditional English songs and stirring originals from Denny, Matthews, Richard Thompson, and Ashley Hutchings. Sandy Denny's vocals are moving, especially their take on "She Moves Through the Fair".

"Odyssey - Setting Forth -1971 US": Louis Yovino and Vincent Kusy, decided to weigh in with their own sound. The band they created was the quintessential dictionary definition of the New York brand of sixties psychedelia—it had strong harmonic vocals, heavy swirling organ, and was infused with inspired fuzz guitar. And that band went on to great fame and fortune and is rightly considered one of the best rock bands ever to play.

"Mongo Santamaria- All Strung Out -1969 US": Ramon Santamaría Rodriguez, more known like Mongo Santamaría (Havana, 7 of April of 1922 - Miami, 1 of February of 2003), was a Cuban percussionist.

In 1950 he was transferred to New York , where he touched with some of most famous bands of Latin jazz, like Perez Prado, Tito Bridge, Fania All-Stars...

In 1963 its first success between ten simple more scored sold with "Watermelon Men", composition written by Herbie Hancock.
Covers of 'Day Tripper','I Heard It Through The Grapevine','I Thank You'...
Pure dance energy with horn stabs, percussion breaks and a jamming piano line. This is one of Mongo’s best albums.
