"Coke - S/T- 1972 U.S":

Coke were an obscure Florida combo who mixed together Latin, funk and soul, served up in a crossover style that's halfway between the sound of the NuYorican generation and the heavier hitters of LA's Chicano funk scene. Instrumentation includes organ, guitar, trumpets and vocals are delivered in a brown eyed soul style that burns nicely with the heavier grooves of the group. But best of all is the drummer, who really kicks it large on the kit and creates some really nice funky numbers on the set. A really great album with a totally unique sound!!!

"Geraldo Pino & The Heartbeats - Heavy Heavy Heavy-1960s-70s Sierra Leone":

Geraldo Pino (aka Gerald Pine) is one of the hidden heroes of African popular music. A singer, guitarist and bandleader from Sierra Leone, Geraldo had a major influence on the burgeoning soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa during the 1960s and 70s. He made a huge impression on the young Fela Kuti who praised him effusively but his music has remained largely unheard for the past 30 years.
Pino’s party grooves and the Funk Imperative which underlines his musical philosophy make these dance tracks sound just as vital today as they did back then. The long-lost hero of Afro Soul Funk!!!

"Selda Bagcan -Mogollar - Turkulerimiz 1 -1971 Turkey":

Protest Anatolian folk / psychedelic singer Selda Bagcan is the leading female artist in a maledominant world. Her intense voice and impressive skill at reinterpreting hundreds of years old Turkish folk tunes, supplied her a welldeserved fame all around the world even though she was a bit laterecieved. On the other hand, because of her political view, she was banned, prisoned and abondened in the chaotic years of Turkish history.
Selda Bagcan was born in 1948. She grew up in a welleducated family, where she showed interest in music at an early age. She played the guitar for selfpleasure, until her first two singles recorded in 1971 sold almost a million. That being the turning point, she step by step became one of the most influential female figures in Turkish folk scene. She recorded a single with Mogollar in 1972. Same year, she was sent to Bulgaria by the Turkish goverment to participate in the Golden Orfeus Festival.

GARYBALDI

Garybaldi was an Italian progressive rock band founded in the early 1970s.
They were founded as Gleemen by guitarist Bambi Fossati and, apart from Fossati, they included Maurizio Cassinelli (drums and voice), Lio Marchi (keyboards) and Angelo Traverso (bass). Their first work was a cover of the Beatles' "Lady Madonna", followed by the LP Gleemen (1970). In 1971 they changed their name to Garybaldi, under which they published their first LP in 1972, entitled Nuda ("Naked"). Inspired by both Jimi Hendrix and rock progressive style, it featured a notable cover by artist Guido Crepax.
In 1973 Marchi and Traverso left, Sandro Serra entering as bassist. Under this new formation the band released their second LP, Astrolabio, where the rock progressive influence was more evident. The band broke up after its release.

"The Staple Singers- Bealtitude Respect Yourself -1972 US":

The Staple Singers were a American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914-2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha, Pervis, Yvonne and Mavis. The family began appearing in Chicago-area churches in 1948, and signed their first professional contract in 1952. During their early career they recorded in an acoustic gospel-folk style. While the family surname is "Staples", the group used the singular form for its name, resulting in the group's name being "The Staple Singers".They are best known for their 1970s hits "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself".

"Jimmy Castor Bunch - It's Just Begun-1972 US":

Jimmy Castor (born 2 June 1943, New York) is an American soul-funk musician.
In the late 1950s, he worked with the doo-wop group Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. As leader of The Jimmy Castor Bunch in the 1970s, and also as a solo artist, he has released several successful albums and singles, some of which have been heavily sampled in films and in hip-hop. In particular, the saxophone hook and groove from "It's Just Begun" and the spoken word intro and groove from "Troglodyte" have been sampled extensively.
THE JIMMY CASTOR BUNCH put it all together. From Prologue to Epilogue the power of funky soul expands the listening horizon to all. 'It's just Begun' captures the "now," explores the future and revisits the past. The CASTOR experience doesn't stop. 'Psyche' is a myriad of mood, melody and pure mystery. An experience that takes you where you want to go in the best tradition of JIMMY CASTOR'S musical genius.
A MUST HAVE ALBUM!!!

"Quincy Jones - Big Band Bossa Nova -1962 US":

Quincy Jones's 1962 Brazilian jazz classic, due no doubt to "Soul Bossa Nova" inclusion on the AUSTIN POWERS soundtrack. In addition to that show-stealer, BIG BAND BOSSA NOVA delivers takes on several samba classics, including "Desifinado" and the timeless classic, "One Note Samba."
Jones teams up with Lalo Schiffrin on "Lalo Bossa Nova," and even takes on Charles Mingus's "Boogie Bossa Nova." "A Taste of Honey" and on "On the Street Where You Live" are where Jones talent for creative arranging really shines through.
Jones attention to detail adds a subtlety to these recordings which makes them stand out as among the 1960s' best jazz records.

"Merry Clayton- Gimme Shelter -1970 US":

Merry Clayton was the woman dueting with Mick on the Rolling Stones' original 1969 recording of "Gimme Shelter". On her inclusion, Jagger said in the 2003 book According to... The Rolling Stones, "The use of the female voice was the producer's idea. It would be one of those moments along the lines of "I hear a girl on this track - get one on the phone."

Clayton gives her solo performance and one of the song's most famous pieces, after a solo performed by Richards, repeatedly singing "Rape, murder; It's just a shot away, It's just a shot away," and finally screaming the final stanza. Merry and Jagger finish the song with the line, "Love, sister, it's just a kiss away." To date it remains one of the most prominent contributions to a Rolling Stones track by a female vocalist.

Members:Merry Clayton:vocals -Guitars: David T. Walker, David Cohen, Louie Shelton, Lou Morrell, Orville "Red" Rhodes- Piano & Organ: Joe Sample, Billy Preston- Conga: King Errisson Percussion: Gary Coleman, Victor Feldman- Bass: Bob West- Drums: Paul Humphrey

"The Incredible String Band-U-1970 UK":

The Incredible String Band were a psychedelic folk band formed in Scotland in 1965. The band built a considerable following, especially within British counter culture before splitting up in 1974. The members of the group are considered musical pioneers in psych folk and by integrating a very wide variety of traditional music forms and instruments, in the development of world music.
"U" is a double album by The Incredible String Band released in 1970 on Elektra Records.
The music on the album is taken from the Incredible String Band's live mixed-media show of the same name, for which the band had just concluded performances when they recorded the album.
The letter "U" represented a transition from a high level of spiritual awareness to a low, then returning to a final peak of awareness and communication.

PRESS RELEASE July 7, 2008

We’re Late For Class’ Jams With Jim MorrisonVia a medium, stoner college jam band We’re Late For Class performed a 14 minute improvisational space jam along with the disembodied voice of Jim Morrison, the late singer of The Doors.“Why not!?,” said a We’re Late For Class spokesman. “It's cheaper than a living singer, what with classified ads, lodging and alcohol... and besides, you know how lead singers are to deal with.

”It’s entitled The Jim Morrison Seance Tapes and is their 30th. It’s available for free at the band’s blog: http://werelateforclass.blogspot.com/

“So you don't think this is just something we slapped together with old recordings and ProTools... (you can hear) the engineer ask Jim for the ‘post-death stuff... the stuff without copyrights,’” the spokesman persisted.

“In the end,” he said, ”it went smoother than our Screamin' Jay Hawkins seance.”The free download also includes a 14 minute instrumental version for those that don’t buy the premise.

"Les Mogol - Danses et Rythmes de la Turquie-1971 France-Turkey":

Turkish-born Murat Ses is an early pioneer of what we now know as world music. He was a founding member, composer and multi-instrumentalist of the group Mogollar, which was a trend setter and one of the sound architects in modern Eurasian folk music.
His 1971 LP 'Danses et Rythmes de la Turquie' was awarded Grand Prix du Disque by the Charles Cros Academie in Paris, France. That album is probably one of the first world music albums made in the 1970s and it did not come from Africa.

Great album by the fantastic Mogollar (or Les Mogol as they were known in France, where this LP was first released).
Do not trust this LP cover showing some musicians with traditionals instruments. This is a real pure Anatolian folk-psych-pop treasure. Modern sounds like electric organs, fuzz guitars & Fender basslines.

"Luiz Henrique and Walter Wanderley -Popcorn -1967 Brazil":

An excellent collaboration between 2 of Verve's best Brazilian artists of the late 60s, the groovy organist Walter Wanderley and the breezy breathy vocalist Luiz Henrique!
The set is a perfect example of the way that Verve took bossa playing and gave it a groovy production twist turning it into something that was just a little bit different, in a mode that became America's best contribution to the bossa era! The legendary Sivuca puts in a great guest appearance on a few tracks, further enhancing the sound with his "singing" style of accordion work and the whole thing bounces along in a magical groove that's hardly been duplicated again!
Titles include a very unusual funk-based take on "Happy Birthday" one that has a bit of a break to it plus "Kee Ka Roo", "Popcorn" (not the Perry-Kingsley hit), "Florianopolis", "In My Automobile", "Dusty Road" and "Blue Island".

"Cold Sun- Dark Shadows-1969 US":

Cold Sun from Austin, Texas recorded "Dark Shadows" in 1969 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirationsfor this unique piece actually go back to the desperated, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true 60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as "Ra-Ma" , "Here In The Year" and "Fall".

"Burnin' Red Ivanhoe -W.W.W.-1971 Denmark":

One of the biggest names of Scandinavian progressive groups that became well-known worldwide. Their music can be described as progressive jazz-rock under influences of beat, R&B and psychedelia. The compositions present often improvisational long passages with Karsten Vogel's (soprano sax, alto sax) musical visions. The other members are: Kim Menzer (flute, violin, trombone, harmonica), Ole Fick (guitars, vocals), Jess Stæhr (bass), Bo Thrige Andersen (drums).
They started in 1967 but the first album appeared two years later. The third album W.W.W. is probably their most progressive work. The music is more placid without crazy sax solos and R&B tracks, also over 8-minutes excellent 2nd Floor Croydon has more progressive character.

"Grupo Ciruela - Regreso Al Origen -1973 Mexico":

Hard & really dusted Mexican boogie with Jethro Tull/Black Sabbath influence. Pretty much in the style of Los Dug Dugs, but with a lot of ridiculously overfast drumming. Some English lyrics, & they're nicely flubbed in spots, with plenty of bombastic vocal overkill. One of the heavier ones from south of the border, but still retains that stoner booze filled hippy vibe that goes with most things from there.
