"Bobby Matos-My Latin Soul-1968 US":
Percussionist Bobby Matos is one of the most highly respected drummers in the entire Afro-Cuban/Latin jazz genre. Born in the Bronx, New York City, on July 24, 1941, Matos came from a musical family, but was more interested initially in dancing than playing an instrument. Matos didn't begin to take drumming seriously until his late teens, while also learning how to play conga in the basements of churches in Harlem, as he looked up to such artists as Tito Puente for inspiration. It was around this time that Matos joined his first band, The Combo Conquistadores, comprised solely of conga, flute, and bass. By the late '60s, Matos had graduated to bandleader (just as the salsa movement began to gain full steam), resulting in one of his best-known songs, "My Latin Soul (Tema de alma latina)" produced by Joe Cain, a respected figure in Latin jazz.
"My Latin Soul" swings confidently in and out of both Latin soul (boogaloo) and Latin jazz.

"Chakachas - Jungle Fever-1972 Belgium":
The Chakachas were a Belgium based group of Latin Soul studio musicians.
Also known as Les Chakachas or Los Chakachas, they were formed by band leader Gaston Bogaert (percussion) Kari Kenton (vocals & maracas) Vic Ingeveldt (Dutchman from Liege, saxophone) Charlie Lots (trumpet) Christian Marc (piano) Henri Breyre (guitar & backing vocals) and Bill Raymond (bass).
They started out in the late 1950s and had a Belgian #1 in 1958 with "Eso Es El Amor", which was sung in Spanish. Although they issued numerous recordings, they are best remembered for their hit single "Jungle Fever" from 1972, which sold over a million copies in the U.S. and reached #3.
Recommended to all the fans of Salsa and Latin Funk sounds of the 1970s !!!

"Akritas -Ακρίτας- S/T - 1973 and 1973 single Greece":
Stavros Logarides had recorded two albums with Poll while Aris Tasoulis had previously played in Despina Glezou's backing group. Nothing of their past can be compared to Akritas. Their sole album is among the top 3 from Greece, a tremendous concoction of complex progressive rock, forming a concept album of the same grandeur as Aphrodite's Child's "666". This is music of great ambition with myriads of changes in rhythms and textures much like the best works of Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In 1973 recorded a single "O Pan-Tis Zois I Proti Mou Stalia".

"Jimi Hendrix & The Isley Brothers - In the Beginning-1964 US(1971 German Issue)":
The Isley Brothers
originally raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. The original group consisted of the three elder sons of O'Kelly Isley, Sr. and Sally Bell Isley: O'Kelly Jr., Rudolph and Ronald, who formed in 1954 and recorded with small labels singing doo-wop and rock 'n' roll.
Jimi Hendrix began his career playing as a "sideman" to some of the greatest performers in soul music. During the early and mid-'60s, he worked with such R&B/soul greats as Little Richard, The Isley Brothers, and King Curtis as a backup guitarist.
Cut around 1965, while Hendrix was still part of the Isley's band, these casual sessions, remixed to push his guitar up with the voices, are far superior to Curtis Knight's- Hendrix tapes. His most lasting output from this period can be heard on the Isley Brothers hit song "Testify" Parts 1 & 2.

"Boa - Wrong Road -1971 US":
Boa was a heavy psych group from Michigan.Their sole album "Wrong Road" was originally issued as a private pressing. Boa recorded "Wrong Road" on a Sony TC-200 in a Tupperware warehouse. Garage, Psychedelic and Blues flavored tunes like "Never Come Back," "Wrong Road," and "Brave New World" with lots of harsh vocals, keyboards and Killer guitar work.
Boa were a group of talented musicians that could have done much more if they continued playing together.

"The Beau Brummels - You Tell Me Why-Don't Talk To Strangers-Volume 2-1965 US" :
The Beau Brummels' second album, cunningly titled "VOLUME 2", is far superior to the somewhat derivative "INTRODUCING THE BEAU BRUMMELS". Guitarist Ron Elliot's surprisingly downbeat folk-rock songs are both smarter and more tuneful than those of most of his garage-rocking contemporaries, and the best tracks here, such as "Don't Talk to Strangers" and the brave-front "Doesn't Matter," show that he's one of the most underrated songwriters of his era.
Sal Valentino's vocals, as always, are terrific, and Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone) is a canny producer-arranger, giving the songs a crisp, airy feel.

"Mecki Mark Men-Running In The Summer Night-1969 Sweden":
Mecki Mark Men
was contracted by Philips in Sweden but it was Limelight records in the USA who released it 1969.
Musically it is still brain melting Heavy Acid Space Rock driven by the fury of demons, but now with pure and dynamic sound.
Mecki Mark Men was (together with Hansson and Karlsson) Jimi Hendrix favourite Swedish band. When Jimi came back from his Swedish tours he probably told the tales about the wild Swedish Organ tormentor Mecki Bodemark who did the same things with his grinding Organ as Jimi did with his guitar.
They sounds like a mix of Teargas, High Tide and Jimi Hendrix but with a wild organ player in glittering space costume. The mighty guitar wizard Kenny H.karlsson has never been more psychedelic than this.

"Unfolding- How to Blow Your Mind And Have A Freak Out Party -1967 US":
This 1967 LP was recorded in NYC at the height of the Flower Power Movement. It features David Dalton and Victoria Sackville on vocals. Not bad at all, but surprisingly pretty OK for stretches, especially considering the typical quality of these types of had-to-be-there period curios that purport to blow your mind with an aural approximation of an acid trip.
This psychedelic party is more than a bit hit-and-miss, to be sure. For instance, opener "I've Got a Zebra - She Can Fly" is five minutes of druggy guitar jamming with requisite (and not entirely uninteresting) panning effects and pitch fluctuations before the music simply cuts out mid-sentence as if a shiny bauble (or perhaps a pan of hash brownies) had just been waved in front of the Unfolding's glazed eyes.

"The Majestics - Here Come Da Judge- 1968 Canada":
This Rhythm 'n' Blues/Soul group started out in 1965 as Jay Smith And The Majestics but changed name to Shawne and Jay Jackson and The Majestics when Shawne's brother, and ex-Pharaohs member, Jay Jackson joined the group. Shawne Jackson had previously played in Jack Hardin And The Silhouttes, Fred Keeler was brought in from David Clayton-Thomas And The Shays. Drummer Wes Morris started out in Jon And Lee And The Checkmates, Crone had played with Bobby Kris, Cudmore had been a member of Robbie Lane And The Disciples. They released several albums and singles on the ARC Records labels. The group split up in 1969.
Their last album "Here Come Da Judge" from 1968 shows this Canadian combo playing funky soul & r&b instrumentals with emphasis on the Hammond Organ in songs like "Here Comes the Judge", "Soul Serenade", "The Horse", "Mr. Pitiful", "I Got You Babe", "Do Your Own Thing", "Tell Mama", "Tighten Up", "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay", and "It Should Have Been Me", with guest vocals by Jackie Gabriel.

"Barbara Lynn - The Crazy Cajun Recordings":
Lynn was born Barbara Lynn Ozen in Beaumont, Texas, on January 16, 1942. She played the piano as a child before switching to guitar, inspired by Elvis Presley.
Singer/guitarist Barbara Lynn was a rare commodity during her heyday. Not only was she a female instrumentalist (one of the very first to hit the charts), but she also played left handed quite well at that and even wrote some of her own material.
Lynn's music often straddled the line between blues and Southern R&B. After winning a few talent shows and playing some teen dances, the still-underage Lynn started working the local clubs and juke joints, risking getting kicked out of school if she had been discovered.
Singer Joe Barry caught her live act and recommended her to his friend, producer/impresario Huey P. Meaux, aka the Crazy Cajun.
In 1966 Lynn recorded one of the best feminine songs "I'm A Good Woman", which presented the everyday life of "good" women at the time. To my ears this is a hippie anthem although is a blue soul song, that's why i believe it was later covered by El Chicano and Cold Blood.
In 2002 electronic musician Moby sampled Lynn's catchy "I'm A Good Woman" on his album "18" in the song titled "Another Woman".

"Joe Peace - Finding Peace Of Mind-1972 US":
Cincinnati, Ohio was home to this singer-songwriter, who wrote, produced and arranged all 10 tracks on the above album. The album was recorded in Ohio in 1972, after being a long time on road. Joe Peace was inspirated by Johnny Rivers and his experiences he made on road, when writing his 10 emotional songs for this album, that contains heavy fuzz guitars and powerful voice. Sounds a bit like Darius. Already a very rare album it is worth checking out if you find a copy.

"Dennis Coffey-Instant Coffey-1974 US":
Dennis Coffey (born November 1940, Detroit, Michigan) is an American guitarist. He was a studio musician for many soul and R&B recordings. This longtime Motown session guitarist scored his own funky hits in the early 1970s with "Theme from Black Belt Jones," "Getting It On" and especially "Scorpio," which is one of the all-time breakbeat cuts. He worked with virtually every Detroit act from the late 60s through the late 70s, including The Dramatics (that's him on "In the Rain") and Funkadelic (uncredited on the first album). As the decade progressed, he scored with the jazz-funk "Wings of Fire."As a producer/writer, he helped discover Rare Earth and the pop group Gallery.
"Instant Coffey" is a Funky Instrumental LP from Dennis Coffey featuring "Theme From Enter The Dragon" among others.

"Child-S/T-1969 US":
This short-lived outfit specialised in melodramatic cover versions of popular songs of the day. The album, which was recorded at Select Sound Studios, in New York, includes slowed down versions of classics like "Hold On I'm Comin", "You'll Never Walk Alone", "Ol' Man River" and the instrumental "Exodus". All come with lots of very heavy organ in the same mould as Vanilla Fudge. Certainly worth a spin.

"Mustafa Ozkent Orkestrasi- Genclik Ile Elele -1972 Turkey":
Mustafa Ozkent's LP “Genclik Ile Elele” was released in 1972. Mustafa Ozkent started his career as a musician in 1960 with his youngsters band “Teenagers”, located in Ankara. It was called so, as no member was older than 19. Later on, he formed his own band, the Mustafa Ozkent Orkestrasi and cut some singles and this LP. "Genclik Ile Elele" album is an odd combination of A-Go-Go, funk, psychedelica, loose improvisation without in advance too melodically structured ideas, based upon an Anatolian folk inspired crossover style.
Very "western", and at the same time exotic.
A great album.

"The Free Design - Kites Are Fun-1967 US":
To this day, The Free Design remain one of the true masters of all things soft-pop-psych. Hailing from New York, The Free Design were a late '60s/early '70s family pop group, releasing seven brilliant albums and influencing countless musicians (Beck, Belle & Sebastian, Cornelius, Stereolab...).
The members were all members of the Dedrick family: Chris Dedrick (who wrote most of the songs), sister Sandy and brother Bruce were the original lineup. Younger sister Ellen joined the group later, and youngest sister Stefanie joined near the end of their initial career.
Fans of The Beach Boys and The Association take note. Originally released in 1967, this is their debut album.

"The Carolyn Hester Coalition-S/T-1968 US":
Carolyn Hester (born January 28, 1937 in Waco,Texas) is an American folk singer and songwriter. She was figure in the early '60s folk music revival. Hester's first album was produced by Norman Petty in 1957. In 1960, she made her second album for the label run by the Clancy Brothers, thrusting Hester into the thick of the folk revival. In the late 1960s, unable to succeed as a folk-rock artist, she explored psychedelic music as part of the Carolyn Hester Coalition before largely drifting out of the business.
The album is a fine West Coast-style Hippie fuzz Folk Rock/Pop affair with Hester singing in a decidedly non-folky Acid Bubblegum style. Solid all the way through, this album should appeal to any fan of Neighb'rhood Child'n, Birmingham Sunday and similar semi-light trips. The opening "Magic Man" is well known due to its inclusion on the Hippie Goddesses compilation.

"Linda Ronstadt-Stone Poneys and Friends- Vol. III-1968 US":
The Stone Poneys were a folk-rock trio formed in Los Angeles, consisting of Bob Kimmel (rhythm guitar and vocals),Kenny Edwards (lead guitar and vocals), and Linda Ronstadt (vocals). Linda Ronstadt- Stone Poneys and Friends- Vol. III is the third and final album by The Stone Poneys although Linda Ronstadt would release her first solo album the following year.
While all three bandmembers are shown on the cover on the first two albums, only Linda Ronstadt is on the front cover of this album.Unlike the first two albums, when they composed most of the songs, the other bandmembers,Bob Kimmel and Kenny Edwards were the songwriters on only two of the songs. (In fact, Edwards had already left the band before work began on this album).
For the remaining tracks, Linda Ronstadt sought out material by well regarded musicians such as Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro."Morning Glory" which was on Tim Burkley's second album,Goodbye And Hello (1967) was renamed "Hobo" by Linda Ronstadt. The other two Tim Buckley songs come from his first album,Tim Buckley (1966). Another cover of "Let's Get Together" ( also known as "Get Together") is regarded today as a quintessential hippie/flower power appeal for peace and brotherhood.

"Brother Jack McDuff- The Best Of Live! ":

Brother Jack McDuff (September 17, 1926-January 23, 2001) was a jazz organist and organ trio bandleader who was most prominent during the hard bop and soul jazz era of the 1960s, often performing with an organ trio.

Encouraged by Willis Jackson in whose band he also played bass in the late 50s, McDuff moved to the organ and began to attract the attention of Prestice Records while still with Jackson's group. "Bunalim-1970-72 Turkey":
Along with Erkin Koray's Underground Quartet, Bunalim was the band that defined Turkish Underground music.
They were formed in 1969 with the aim of having underground music reach wider audiences. They couldn't succeed well as their approach was very much wilder and uncompromising than any of their peers at the time. Running all nude down the Istiklal Street, psychedelic light shows, crazy paintings all over the stage wall. "Tas var köpek yok" is their first single from 1969 when they were very raw in sound and the interrupting guy at the end of the song is none other than Cem Karaca who managed them at the time. Later on Bunalim went on to be a psychedelic hard rock band and disbanded by 1972.After disbanding members of the band formed Ter, a (hard rock) band with Erkin Koray. Their records are in "golden grail" status right now.

"Giannis Spanos-Anazitisis-Γιάννης Σπανός-Αναζήτησις- 1972 OST-Greece":

These film was kind of an underground cult in Greece. Greek actress Elena Nathanael, known for her good looks, rose to fame in the 1960s when she starred in a number of Greek movies but her career tailed off in the 1970s and she made only rare appearances in TV series in the last few years.
Elena embodied the "new woman" (financially independent and sexually free) in the Greek commercial cinema of the mid-sixties to the early seventies. She died 4 March 2008, after a long battle against lung cancer. The music of Giannis Spanos has some great bass, organ and guitar moments. (repost by request)

"Cane and Able - S/T -1972 France":
The first album of Cane and Able have a psyche rock flavor with trippy guitar arrangements, hot brass and strong funky grooves. The album recorded in France with great funk tracks like "Girl you move me", Wilson Pickett’s "Don't knock my love" and Kool and the Gang's "Who's gonna take the weight ?". The album mixes the African influences with more of a hard soul vocal approach, with some cuts sounding a bit like material from Atlantic albums of the late 60s, but handled with more of a fuzzy edge.

"Quicksilver Messenger Service - Maiden Of The Cancer Moon -Live At The Fillmore East June 1968 & The Pacific High Recording Studios Broadcast 1968 US":
This performance was the first of two extraordinary QMS shows from an inspired run at the Fillmore East. The wonderful quality of the recording aside, this is just a fantastic performance.
By summer 1968, when this concert was recorded, Cipollina and Duncan's guitar playing was reaching peak levels of intensity and their creativity seemed boundless.
QMS
shared the bill with the Electric Flag and Steppenwolf. QMS was the middle act and played two sets per night.
This album is a memorial to the band's magnificence and probably one of the best live guitar albums ever recorded!!!

"The Zipps - Be Stoned! Dig The Zipps - 1966-69 Holland":
For ages, Dutch beat collectors have scavenged the Lowlands for Zipps records, mostly in vain. Over the years, a few tracks turned up on various bootleg compilation LPs, alerting collectors to the unique, hip sounds of the Zipps. In 1999, a full 30 years after their last official release, the Dutch record label Pseudonym released a great Zipps retrospective entitled "Be Stoned! Dig: The Zipps".Released on both vinyl (limited to 500 copies!), and CD, this collection of songs chronicles every 45, every studio recording, several choice live cuts, two Philippe Salerne songs featuring the Zipps, unreleased stereo versions of "The Struggle for Ice-Cold Milk Of Benzi The Bass-Player Or How To Promote Original Dutch Milk" and "Kicks And Chicks".

"Selda Bagcan - Selda -1976 Turkey":
Anatolian, electronic, progressive-protest, psych-folk-funk-rock from the Middle East. Selda Bağcan is a Turkish singer and guitarist. She was born in 1948. The Turkish military rulers persecuted her in the 80's due to her political songs.
"Selda" released in 1976 to huge critical acclaim and skepticism in equal parts, the album smashed new boundaries both lyrically and musically. But the fact that Selda was one of the few female voices to adopt the use of such cutting edge techniques put the LP in a league of its very own. Frowned on by the paranoid Turkish authorities she would face the threat of imprisonment due to her unwaning desire for freedom of speech and a demand for a quality of human life.
Selda would face future jail sentences and travel restrictions as her popularity spread amongst Turkish communities in Europe and America.
A recommended progressive Anadolu Folk Rock / Psych record.

"Grace Slick & The Great Society - Collector's Item-1966 Live US":
Although The Great Society lasted for one year only, they are one of San Francisco's important bands. Their style helped define the early San Francisco sound and tracks like "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit", which later became Top 10 hits for Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane who recoreded the songs when Grace joined them.
The band was founded by brothers Darby and Jerry Slick and Jerry's wife Grace who all came from a wealthy bohemian background, i.e. they did whatever they liked to do and once they decided to start a band they did just that.
In the beginning Jerry would play the drums, Grace sang harmonies and played guitar as did Darby who had already played guitar in several bands.
Subsequently Darby Slick became the driving force in the band and especially his musical eastern influences (Ravi Shankar), paired with Grace's outstanding vocals, became one of the band's trademarks. The band recruited Bard Dupont as bass player (replaced by Peter Vangelder in 1966). Actually Bard couldn't play bass but his long hair made him look like one and when he promised to learn how to play he got he job. Bard also brought in guitarist David Miner who worked with him at the Post Office. It was Bard's friend David Freiberg who came up with the name The Great Society (in sarcastic honour of LBJ).
From October to December 1965 they recored several tracks for Autumn Records at Golden Gate Studios which were produced by Sly Steward (Sly Stone). The Great Society continued to play places like the Matrix, the Fillmore and the Avalon Ballroom.

"Ultimate Spinach-S/T-1967 US":
The Ultimate Spinach was a psychedelic band originally from Boston, composed of keyboardist/guitarist Ian Bruce-Douglas and singer Barbara Hudson.
"Ultimate Spinach" is the 1967 self-titled debut album by Ultimate Spinach and was released on the MGM Records label. The phenomenon of a "Boston Sound", (whose other top acts included The Beacon Street Union, also on MGM), was more a publicity stunt than a legitimate artistic movement, and the Bruce-Douglas version of the band tends to be remembered for its name.
On "Ultimate Spinach" the standout cuts are "(Ballad of) The Hip Death Goddess", with an instrumental interval for theremin (an early electronic instrument), feedback and reverberation, and the psychoanalytic folk-blues "Ego Trip" , the 4-part suite "Sacrifice of the Moon" as well as "Your Head Is Reeling" and the Frank Zappa-esque "Plastic Raincoats".
Their first album was reviled by the critics as phoney, now 40 years later it's getting some respect as an acid classic. In 2008 the English glossy magazine Classic Rock listed the 42 Greatest Psychedelic Albums. This album was Number 36, in there with Sgt Peppers, Axis Bold as Love, Disraeli Gears, etc.

"Fela and Afrika 70-Sorrow Tears and Blood-1977 Nigeria":
Born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos in 1938, Fela's family was firmly middle class as well as politically active. His father was a pastor (and talented pianist), his mother active in the anti-colonial, anti-military, Nigerian home rule movement. So at an early age, Fela experienced politics and music in a seamless combination.
"Sorrow Tears and Blood" accurately depicts the trail left in the wake of the February 18, 1977, raid by 1,000 armed Nigerian army men on Fela Kuti and his Kalakuta republic. In keeping with the format upheld on a majority of Kuti's long-players, this disc contains a pair of extended works, featuring one title per LP side. In contrast to the hard-edged and aggressive Afro-funk that Kuti and his Africa 70 became synonymous with, both the A-side title track and B-side, "Colonial Mentality," are seemingly staid, in light or perhaps because of the cruel statesponsored attacks that he and his extended family suffered.
"Sorrow Tears and Blood" is neither a full-blown, up-tempo funk drone nor a somber dirge. The even-handed, mid-tempo groove trots along at a steady pace and features some comparatively sedate sax work from Kuti.
His lyrics are starkly direct: "Everybody run, run, run/Everybody scatter, scatter/Some people lost some bread/Some people just die". Perhaps this is the result of fear, shellshock, or a combination of the two. Kuti's words, however, remain as indicting as ever: "Them leave sorrow, tears, and blood/Them regular trademark."
It's almost impossible to overstate the impact and importance of Fela Anikulapo (Ransome) Kuti (or just Fela as he's more commonly known) to the global musical village: producer, arranger, musician, political radical, outlaw. He was all that, as well as showman, inventor of Afro-beat, an unredeemable sexist, and a moody megalomaniac. His death on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS deeply affected musicians and fans internationally, as a musical and sociopolitical voice on a par with Bob Marley was silenced.
